2 Year Old: Horse will be judged on their ability to demonstrate a basic reining pattern, consisting of circles, stops, rollbacks, backup and turns. Points will be awarded on each area and emphasis will be placed on smoothness. When finished with the pattern, the rider will call for his/her cow. The horse is required to BOX at the narrow end of the arena rate and tracking a cow is not required. Once the cow enters the arena, the rider will stop the cow first, and then proceed to box.

3 Year Old: Rider will sort a cow from the herd and witht eh help of two turn back riders and two herd holders, demonstrate the horse's ability to hold the cow. The horse will be judged on how smoothly it works threw the herd and vowiness. Once the rider shows he can control, and hold the cow, rider will drive the cow and pen it on the other end of the arena. Rider will have a basic reining pattern consisting of circles, stops, rollbacks, spins, and picking up leads. Pattern will be posted.

Bridle Horse: Open to any horse shown in shank bit. Solid mouthpieces only (no jointed mouthpieces). Reins held in one hand and cannot be changed suring the run, except to rope or to open/close gate. You can spank your horse behind the sholder, with split or romal. Excessive spanking may incur a penalty.

Junior Horse: Open to horses 3-5 years old. The horse must be shown in a snaffle bit or hackamore. The Junior Horse will be ridden with two hands. When roping and opening/closing gates, a rider is allowed to put the reins in one hand.

$2,000 Limited: Is open to any person who has not won $2,000 in Reining, Cutting, Reined Cow Horse events or Ranch Horse competitions. Any age horse may be ridden in any legal bit. The performance will be declared on the entry form.

Rein and Box: is open to anyone who doesn't have the desire to run a cow down the fence or to rope. The only requirements are performing a reining pattern and boxing a cow on the end of the arena. The show committee has the right to ask the contestant to move up another class. The entire committee will have to vote on this.

General Guidelines

This is a timed and point event. Each rider's time will begin when he/she enters the arena and the rider will have a specific amount of time to complete the maneuvers. The whistle will sound for a one minute warning and will sound again at the conclusion of the allotted time. The rider will have 6 or 7 minutes (depending on class).

The contestant rides into the arena, pauses for the announcer to signal start. Start Ranch Riding, next perform a reined work portion, then move straight into a cow-working segment (at this time the rider signals for a cow to be turned out into the arena). Upon completion of the cow work, the rider will then rope the cow and stop it. The time stops then, but the rider must still drive the cow from the arena, while controlling their rope. Rider must open the gate for the next contestant and close the gate after they have entered, and rider has departed the arena.

Ranch Riding
The contestant will ride the horse into the arena, wait for the announcer to signal start. Proceed around the arena to the right, following directions on the posted signs. At the end of tone lap, you will reverse (rollback) and proceed following the posted signs, ending up back at the "in" gate. Run over. Start Reined Work.

Reined Work Portion
The horse will be judged on its ability to perform 6 basic maneuvers: circles, lead changes, stops, back, turn-around (spins) and rollbacks. A pattern, which allows all of these elements to be performed, will be sent out to any contestant requesting one. The pattern will be posted the morning of the show for those who didn't request one.

Cow Work Portion
When the cow is turned out, the rider must box the cow at the end of the arena. If the contestant is only in Rein & Box Class, the rider will not allow the cow to run down the fence, maintaining control so as not to have this happen. In the other classes, the rider will allow the cow to run down the gence, turning the cow both directions. Circling the cow will be at the judge's discretion. DISQUALIFICATION for bluntly or negligently running cow into the fence. This is a Ranch Horse Competition, treat the fence as if it were a 4 strand barbed wire!

Roping Portion
Once the turns have been made, the rider will rope the cow. Judging will consist of three different segments: 1. Speed 2. Rate and Tracking 3. Dallying and Stop. The rider is allowed 2 throws and there is no dragging. After stopping the cow, the rider must return the cow to the catch pen as part of the score. Do not let the rope drag. Handle it and keep control. No contestant will be disqualified for a miss as the judge will still score the speed and the rate and tracking.

Ranch Horse Competition

1. Ride into arena, wait to be started. Begin Ranch Riding.

2. Start around the arena to the right, following the directions on signs.

3. After ranch riding , start reining pattern.(see patterns)

4. After reining pattern, ride to cattle pen and call to gate man for cow.

5. When cow is in the arena, box cow on narrow end of arena, then work the cow on the fence, making sure to turn both ways.

6. After cow is worked, $2,000 Limited, Junior Horse, and Bridle Horse only, must rope, dally and stop the cow. Two (2) loops.

7. At this time, all classes must drive the cow to the catch pen. (If cow is roped, you must control your rope, as part of your score.) Put cow in catch pen.

8. Ride to arena out gate, (the gate you came in) open it from horseback, let the next contestant in, and close it from horseback. Run is over.

9. Time starts when the announcer calls it, time stops when you catch cow. A warning will be announced, when one (1) minute is left. Time limit: 2-year-old, $1,000 Limited, Rein and Box - Six (6) minutes. $2,000 Limited, Junior Horse, and Bridle Horse - Seven (7) minutes.
